Chapter 10

Marwa

If it hadn’t been for Starlight, I’d never have managed the journey. Being drunk, and with Rohene fast asleep, getting her onto the pony took every trick I knew. She was too drowsy to sit upright, so in the end I managed to drape her face-first across Starlight. The trip wasn’t easy. I tripped and staggered through the night until—many hours later—we reached the river.

I was tired enough to have slept for days. The haze of beer faded, leaving me shaky and cold. If it hadn’t been for my dear pony, I didn’t believe I’d have completed the journey. I kissed her sweet cheeks and stroked her flanks gratefully. “Thank you, my darling. Can you help me bring her down?”

Starlight went down on her knees and I somehow slid Rohene to the ground. The physical contact caused a ripple to cascade through my body, and it wasn’t all nice. I felt terrible about lying to her by way of the failed hallucination.

I cried bitterly into Starlight’s mane and hoped Rohene never discovered the truth. “I didn’t mean to. The potion went wrong. Whatever will Mistress say? I didn’t want any of this! Why can’t I be normal—all I want is to date her, not kidnap her.”

But there wasn’t time for laments or sorries. I unwrapped food brought from the castle and chose a flower I thought Rohene might like. It was nice having her close and doing normal things for her instead of sneaking around. I entertained a daydream about how we could date properly, instead of being thrown together by events beyond our control.

While she slept, I hiked out to the high hill—a vantage spot where it was possible to ascertain the distance between lands. In the very far distance, the glow of the healing stone was visible. I reckoned the journey would take about two weeks. With the early sunshine on my face, and Starlight nudging my head, I came up with a plan of how to convince Rohene to come with me. It wasn’t pleasant, but I was too hungover to think of a better one.
